Silver Three Cent Pieces

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 896
1861 Silver Three Cents. PCGS graded MS-67. A nice frosty white example. Lustrous fields ripple with original mint bloom. Against this are set nicely balanced, clear design elements. As we see it, when it comes to the centers of the shield as well as the outlines of the star, the strike is above-average, sharp, and well defined in all areas. On the reverse, as well, the simple C III design shows fully. There is a faint clash mark from the shield lines within the lower part of the Roman numeral. Superb Type 3 example. Pop 22; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 3679) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

1887/6 Nickel Three Cents. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. Nicely toned. Satin surfaces that are almost frosted with pleasant, glowing silver color merging into the reflective quality found on this year's Proof coinage. So much, then, for the luster. As for the devices, these were struck with sufficient power by the dies that they left all design elements showing, and showing plainly, contrasting many where a few areas less detailed. Set your bids accordingly. Those in the room wishing to bid are cautioned not to blink or it will be gone in a moment. Pop 24; 4 finer in 67. Approximately 2,960 Proofs struck (PCGS # 83784) .
